2008 Chevrolet Corvette Returns to Le Mans 24 Hours

Corvette Racing returns to Le Mans 24-Hours

Five-times winner aims for sixth victory in LM GT1 category
63 Wins in 90 races contested
Lessons learned on the track benefit every Corvette pictures on the highway

Corvette Racing, America’s premier sports car racing team, returns to Le Mans in France on the weekend of 14/15th June with the aim of adding to their unique winning tally in the world’s toughest motor race. Since 2001, Corvettes have won the GT1 sports car class five times and have a heritage at the track dating back almost half a century. chervolet pictures.

The 2008 Le Mans 24-Hours continues to see the GT1 category as one of the most competitive arenas, with the Corvette C6.R (Corvette 6th generation, Racing) cars set to do battle with marques such as Aston Martin and Lamborghini. The Corvette Racing team comes to the La Sarthe circuit with an illustrious winning pedigree.

Corvette Racing made its competition debut in 1999 and by the end of the 2007 season had won 63 of the 90 races it had contested. The team’s accomplishments now include seven consecutive American Le Mans Series GT1 manufacturer and team championships and six successive drivers’ championships.

The team’s winning tally goes on: 45 1-2 finishes, five class victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006), five class wins in the Sebring 12-Hours, six class titles in 1,000-mile/10-hour Petit Le Mans events – and an overall victory in the Daytona 24-Hour race.

Equally important is the fact that the Corvette C6.R race programme continues a GM tradition of racing production-based vehicles to improve the breed. A continuous exchange of information and constant transfer of technology between the racing and production programmes ensure that lessons learned on the track benefit every Corvette on the highway. pictures.

This strategy was first mapped out by legendary racer/engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov, himself a former racer at Le Mans, who launched the Corvette into racing in America with a class victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1956. Then in 1960 Briggs Cunningham, a wealthy sportsman racer, fielded a trio of Corvettes at the French classic.

Wearing the blue and white colours that traditionally identified American entries in international racing, the three Team Cunningham Corvettes were joined by another entered by airline pilot Lucky Casner under the Camoradi USA banner. The team’s sponsors were chiefly race fans who had yearned to see an American entry in the French classic. One of the Cunningham cars, driven by John Fitch and Bob Grossman, finished in eighth place overall and first in its class pictures.

The Corvette C5-R pictures, which won in 2001, 2002 and 2004 was based on the fifth generation of the American sports car legend and was replaced by the C6.R, the class winner in 2005 and 2006. The Corvette C6.R is the most technically advanced sports car ever developed by GM, combining sophisticated chassis, powertrain and aerodynamic technology developed by GM Racing with the advanced engineering of the sixth-generation Corvette and Corvette Z06 production models.

The rulebook requires close adherence to production specifications, and the Corvette C6.R’s roots reach to the Corvette assembly plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The same hydroformed aluminium frame rails used in production Corvette coupes and convertibles provide the foundation for the racing version, while the race-prepared 7.0-litre LS7.R small-block V-8 engines inspire the production 7.0-litre/505-hp LS7 small-block V-8 that powers the production Corvette Z06.

“Fifty two years ago, Zora Arkus-Duntov, the godfather of Corvette Racing, conceived the Corvette SS race car to put Corvette squarely in the arena of international endurance racing,” says Chevrolet general manager Ed Peper. “As we reflect on Corvette Racing’s record of success over the years, it’s clear that Corvette Racing has set the standard for engineering excellence, preparation and commitment and the Corvette C6.R has realised Zora’s dream.”

At Le Mans the no. 63 Compuware Corvette C6.R will be driven by Johnny O’Connell (USA), Jan Magnussen (Denmark) and Ron Fellows (Canada). Oliver Gavin (GB), Olivier Beretta (Monaco) and Max Papis (USA) will share the no. 64 Compuware Corvette C6.R.

Two other Corvette C6.R cars are entered by the Luc Alphand Adventures team. Car no. 72 will be driven by Luc Alphand, Guillaume Moureau and Jérôme Policand. The no. 73 Corvette is driven by Patrice Goueslard, Jean Luc Blanchemain and Laurent Pasquali. The four Corvettes will compete against six other cars in the LM GT1 category this year, four Aston Martin DBR-9s, a Saleen S7R and a Lamborghini Murcielago.

The 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans starts at 15.00 hrs local time on Saturday 14th June. Further information can be found at

THE ULTIMATE TRD AURION

Toyota unveiled the TRD Aurion Pro-Factory Xtreme (Pro-FX) drag car at Willowbank Raceway in Queensland today ahead of its debut outing at the biggest event in Australian drag racing, the 2008 Winter nationals.

Run by former Australian champion Tony Wedlock and his Ultimate Motorsport team, the TRD Aurion Pro-FX has a top speed of more than 350km/h.

Powered by a turbocharged six-cylinder Toyota engine, the TRD Aurion Pro-FX produces 1300kW and launches from 0-100km/h in less than one second.

Wedlock will debut the car at this weekend’s Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA) Winternationals – the headline event of the 2008 Australian season.

Toyota Australia motorsport manager Todd Connolly said the TRD Aurion Pro-FX perfectly complemented Toyota Australia’s new range of performance-bred TRD-branded road cars.

“Toyota is synonymous with quality, durability and reliability, while TRD has added style, passion and performance to our line-up,” Connolly said.

“Today’s unveiling of the Ultimate Motorsport TRD Aurion Pro-FX takes us to a whole new level – this car has performance and excitement by the bucket-load.

“We are excited to have Tony Wedlock and the Ultimate Motorsport TRD Aurion Pro-FX spearheading our new drag racing program.”

Wedlock, a former Australian Pro Stock Champion, said the car has been designed and built specifically to run in the new Pro-Factory Xtreme (Pro-FX) category, a class aimed at high-performance six-cylinder vehicles.

The experienced national champion said he was looking forward to debuting the TRD Aurion Pro-FX at Australian drag racing’s biggest event.

“We are eager to show that as well as good looks, our Ultimate Motorsports TRD Aurion Pro-FX has performance to match,” Wedlock said.

“We are looking to push the performance envelope this weekend.”

To celebrate the launch of the TRD Aurion Pro-FX, Willowbank is holding the Toyota Drag Racing Legends Race for Charity that will see four legends of the sport face-off in TRD Aurion road cars.

Run over two heats and a final, the event will showcase the credentials of the TRD Aurion over the quarter-mile, while also raising money for the winner’s chosen charity.

New record time set for full vehicle film fitting with the ABT R8 Audi R8 pictures

Whether it is in the 100 meters, on high-speed jets or eating hot-dogs: world records have always had a special fascination. And with regards to full vehicle film fitting, the German car films pioneer was also faster than all the others. Together with the professional film fitters folioCar, the company was able to set an absolute world best time on 5th June for fitting a whole vehicle with designer films. With this spectacular feat, was attempting an entry into the Guinness Book of Records. As a result, the world record fitting was carried out under the supervision of international media representatives within the scope of the
Ikmedia Experience Day at the TUV premises in Mendig. Audi r8 pictures

An Audi modified by ABT Sportsline was the car used for the fitting, which the crew did not find particularly easy due to its complex chassis shape. Four fitters simultaneously skipped around each other like ballet dancers in a well-rehearsed show, in order to master this Herculean task. The highest quality carbon designer films of FOLIATEC®.com were used. The high-tech plastic material is almost as good as real carbon with regards to quality and durability, and has a deceptively real look. In the fitting not only speed was needed, but also absolute precision. As Oliver Schielein, the general manager of Ikmedia, pressed the stop button at the end, the calibrated digital watch of Swiss Timing showed exactly 2 hours, 25 minutes and 16 seconds. Just prior to this the team was still working hammer and tongs on the fitting, as the last periphery areas were being professionally trimmed with the scalpel. Normally even simple chassis need two full working days to fit. “ Although we could have had more people work on the fitting, it was already pretty tight around the vehicle and the extra people would only have got in the way” , explains Marco Kimme of folioCar.

You have to imagine the process as follows: in order to fit the films, the vehicle paintwork has to be thoroughly cleaned. Only then can the film elements, which have already been roughly pre-cut for the individual vehicle parts, be applied. This requires extreme care, so that the plastic film is fitted according to plan. Following this, only small bubbles or creases can be corrected using a squeegee. Afterwards, the overhanging parts are removed by the scalpel.

In spite of the time pressure, every grip of the folioCar crew was secure. At first glance, even a professional cannot differentiate the carbon look of the ABT R8 from high-quality real carbon, although it is much better value for money. The ABT R8, which was fitted in world record time, looks so perfect that it was handed straight over to the future customer without any further work. Another advantage is the fact that the process is reversible, and on request the films can be removed without a trace – showing the original paintwork. also offers, of course, installation services at all its professional styling team partners and with these special films even at folioCar , the specialists for vehicle film fittings. Even with regards to service the company from Nurnberg might be record-breaking! Audi pictures.
